Whether you’re a hiker or a biker, a rural romantic or an urban flaneur, Slovenia will not disappoint you.
The country is rich with natural phenomena, one of the most famous probably being the Postojna cave. However, just a half an hour drive from Postojna you can also find another spectacular cave that you should visit, Škocjan caves. This will also give you an opportunity to discover the Karst area. From there you can take a trip to the seaside or to Vipava valley.
The mountain-lovers will not have to go far either. The diverse northern part of Slovenia offers many hiking and cycling paths of different lengths and complexity. The regional urban centre, Kranj, is only a half an hour’s drive out of Ljubljana.
The northeastern part of the country is dominated by lowlands, reigned by the northern capital, once European Capital of Culture, Maribor. This culture and vineyard-friendly region is rich with natural thermal springs that our friendly resorts cordially invite you to come and take a swim in. If you are travelling to Maribor from Ljubljana, make sure to stop in the trucker and child-friendly town of Trojane to try one of their famous donuts. The southern part of Slovenia is covered by forests and also home to the Kočevje brown bear.
Of course, the country also offers plenty of things to do. Some of our traditional and fun events include:
- Golden Fox FIS Ski World Cup in Maribor, where our most successful skier Tina Maze finished her career (early January),
- a very special icy winter celebration in Črna na Koroškem, King Matjaž’s Castles (late January),
- Kurentovanje in Ptuj (February), a jovial festival that reminds us of that Spring is not far away,
- The World Ski Jumping Championship in Planica (March),
- Odprta kuhna - Open Kitchen, a weekly celebration of the best that Slovenia’s restaurants have to offer, in the middle of Ljubljana, at affordable prices (March – October),
- The Radovljica Chocolate Festival (April),
- Festival 360⁰ Vipava valley for all sports and adrenaline junkies (April),
- Lent, Maribor (June, July),
- and another fun and sporty adventure, WOTR (August),
- a number of high-quality film festivals, such as the annual LIFFE (Ljubljana International Film Festival, November), and much, much more!
