As a student, you have an option to work through an instrument called ‘Student Work’. There are several agencies around Slovenia that offer a list of open positions and also take care of payments. They also take care of contracts, called referrals. As a student, you have an option to work full-time or part-time. You can also work via the Student Service agency if you are a student from a foreign country and are living in Slovenia through international exchange programs (studying or internship). You can read more about student work on this web page.
If you finish your schooling and wish to stay in Slovenia, you can apply for a work permit. More information about the permit can be found on this web page.

All students, who are under 26 years of age, enjoy subsidized meals. All you have to do is to sign into a special system (and make sure you have a valid student ID - student IDs are renewed every academic year, as long as you fulfill all of your course requirements and proceed to the next academic year).
For more information about student meals visit the ŠOU web page.
After you enter Slovenia and start studying you should also arrange your health insurance. There are two categories. Students arriving from EU member states (including EEA, Switzerland and Australia) and countries with which Slovenia has a concluded bilateral agreements on social insurance (ie R of Macedonia, R Bosnia and Herzegovina, R Serbia and Montenegro) can exercise their right based on their home health insurance. However you must obtain appropriate documents.
International students from third countries not mentioned above may be included in compulsory health insurance in the Republic of Slovenia under the condition that have a document that proves their enrolment at an educational institution in Slovenia.
However note, that after you reach the age of 26, you have to pay for your own health insurance even if you still attend classes and you have yet to obtain your diploma. If you are already employed (not through student work), your employer pays for your compulsory health insurance and you, if you decide for it, only pay for a complementary health insurance.
Children enter the school system at the age of 6. Compulsory education lasts 9 years and children usually finish it at the age of 15. Primary education is state funded, however there are some private schools. When they finish with their primary education, students enter upper secondary education that lasts up to 5 years. Upper-secondary education encompasses general education, i. e. different types of general high school programmes and the matura (final exam, comparable to British A-Levels) course, and vocational and technical education. After that the students have a chance to enter tertiary education that consists of short-cycle higher vocational education and higher education. Short-cycle higher vocational education lasts up to 2 years and students can enroll into public or private institutions that offer these type of courses. Vocational college education is focused on providing students with practical knowledge and experience.
We also have Bologna higher education (BA/BSc, MA/MSc and doctoral levels), which is provided by public or private institutions. Bachelor studies of academic and professional higher study programmes last from three to four years. Students also have an opportunity to gain practical experience through internships, which are incorporated into most curricula.
Through the academic year students have to fulfil designated course requirements (submit courseworks, give presentations, etc.). Once these requirements are completed, students can sit exams. There are 3 examination periods per year, and students have the right to take the same exam 3 times. Upon completion of all of their courses, students write their graduation theses and present it to a committee. Upon graduation, they acquire professional titles: diplomirani ... (VS) or univerzitetni ... (UN).
