Children enter the school system at the age of 6. Compulsory education lasts 9 years and children usually finish it at the age of 15. Primary education is state funded, however there are some private schools. When they finish with their primary education, students enter upper secondary education that lasts up to 5 years. Upper-secondary education encompasses general education, i. e. different types of general high school programmes and the matura (final exam, comparable to British A-Levels) course, and vocational and technical education. After that the students have a chance to enter tertiary education that consists of short-cycle higher vocational education and higher education. Short-cycle higher vocational education lasts up to 2 years and students can enroll into public or private institutions that offer these type of courses. Vocational college education is focused on providing students with practical knowledge and experience.
We also have Bologna higher education (BA/BSc, MA/MSc and doctoral levels), which is provided by public or private institutions. Bachelor studies of academic and professional higher study programmes last from three to four years. Students also have an opportunity to gain practical experience through internships, which are incorporated into most curricula.
Through the academic year students have to fulfil designated course requirements (submit courseworks, give presentations, etc.). Once these requirements are completed, students can sit exams. There are 3 examination periods per year, and students have the right to take the same exam 3 times. Upon completion of all of their courses, students write their graduation theses and present it to a committee. Upon graduation, they acquire professional titles: diplomirani ... (VS) or univerzitetni ... (UN).
